The New Age Crack: Women Addicted To Porn

porn-addiction-

I was somewhat uncertain when I decided to cover this topic. Women addicted to pornography ! OH NO what will people think!?

Talking about pornography in public is  still very much a taboo topic, especially among women.  But hey let’s face it women are sexual beings too and we suffer in silence when it comes to addictions such as porn.

In recent decades, porn has been associated to men who have high testosterone levels.

Truth is, there is an extremely high growing number of women who are becoming more and more addicted to porn .

One of the reasons for the increase in porn addiction between men and women is how easily accessible it is to get and consume porn on the internet. Although there is nothing new about pornography, its  accessibility,  affordability, and anonymity of consumption has attracted millions.

Bill Lyon,  a former lobbyist for the defense industry stated,”It employs in excess of 12,000 people in California. And in California alone, we pay over $36 million in taxes every year. So it’s a very sizable industry.”

Pornography is the largest profitable  business in the world, topping Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Netflix,  and yes even Apple .

From being traded on the New York Stock Exchange, sold in multimillion dollar hotels, and offered on networks such as HBO , Stars, Cinemax, and many others, porn is everywhere!

It can be considered as legalized prostitution. Porn stars are paid to be filmed, exploited by having sex or engage in sexual explicit behavior with another person (another porn star) for the purpose of earning an income.

So what does porn do to the mind ? Why is it considered the new age crack? Is it really that harmful?

Psychiatrists Simone Kühn, PhD &  Jürgen Gallant, PhD published ‘Brain Structure and Functional Connectivity Associated With Pornography Consumption’ , a study that links the responsiveness of the brain to images of pornography.

The study linked high pornography usage to lower volumes and activity in the regions of the brain linked to rewards and motivation. Apparently watching too much porn can trigger less ambition and drive in the mind!

This can also be linked to having a sense of guilt and shame after watching porn , while also having a negative self image of who you are.

In  2003,  a study from ‘Today’s Christian Woman’ found  that 1 out of 6 women, including Christians,  were struggling with porn addictions (The Washington Times).

There is a possibility that since that study 12 years ago, numbers have increased exceedingly.

Donna Rice Hughes, the president of a non profit organization that fights to make the Internet safe for children and families says,  “Pornography is the drug of the millennium and more addictive than crack cocaine,”

As to why porn is considered  crack cocaine, it has  a lot to do with dopamine, norepinephrine, oxytocin, and endorphins.  Dopamine is a chemical in the body that releases a craving for pleasure .

When a person wants to experience some form of high (a high and need for God,  a high in happiness, a high for a particular drug, gambling addiction ,money, love or sex) , dopamine is released.

Dopamine is also released when a person is watching  porn! The person who views porn wants to feel that same gratification of highness.

Oxytocin and vasopressin are hormones that create the long term memories of porn embedded in someone’s mind. Oxytocin is known as the cuddling or bonding hormone.

When a person is addicted to porn, their mind gets wrapped into the emotional connectedness of porn and how it made them feel sexually.

Your brain bonds to the pornographic experience and images and wants to feel that sharp sense of focus every time  a person craves to watch porn.

According to the Sexual Recovery Institute, sex is the number one topic for Internet searches.

With porn also being highlighted on social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram, does this put more and more people at risk in becoming addicted?

What do you think? Are you suffering from porn addiction?
