Why “Holier Than Thou” People Need An Attitude Adjustment

When you’ve been brought  up in the church your whole life, you witness quite a few things. Especially about those members in the physical building of the church. You witness some members ostracizing other members because they are new in their walk with Christ and are still being delivered from sin.

You witness some members casting stones on other members for their imperfections . You witness some members profess their  love for God in church but humiliate others outside of the church building. You pretty much witness that no one in the church is perfect and every member is still dealing with sin, in their own  individual way, even the Pastor.

I’ve  witnessed a lot and have done a lot in my spiritual journey. As my spiritual maturity increases, I can recognize when I’m doing things in the Spirit and out of the Spirit.

Working at a gospel am radio station has also introduced me to quite a few “church” (religious/traditional) mentalities that I have never experienced before. Seems like there’s more fighting in ministry than outside of the ministry.

There are  many things that I am not proud of and sometimes  I wonder why God even decides to use me , but He does and for that I am so unbelievably thankful.

You see God can’t use a lot of people that are in the church  simply because they are unapproachable, prideful, judgmental and HOLIER THAN THOU.  People get SO saved and forget that they are still human.

Let me break down this definition of pride fullness for church folk. Having a sense of pride fullness means you are  disdainful(showing contempt or lack of respect), haughty (condescending), lordly (having or showing a feeling of being better than other people), overbearing (often trying to control the behavior of other people in an annoying or unwanted way). So when you say you aren’t displaying pride fullness , remember the definition. How can God use someone that has no respect for the believer or the sinner?

I saw a meme last night that portrayed  a group of friends enjoying a girls night out and toasting to the celebration of life and friendship. The meme read “When Christians Live In Sin, It Confuses Unbelievers”.

Christians

There were a few things wrong with this message. The first is to never judge a book by its cover. The picture may have looked like the women were drinking, but we honestly have no idea what was in the glasses. The drink could have been a non alcoholic beverage,   for all we know.

The second thing that was judged inappropriately was the fact that these women were fellowshipping with one another in a very respectable way and laughing in joy. That’s not a sin. In fact the word of God tells us in Ecclesiastes 8:15 “So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing for man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to be merry, and this will stand by him in his toils throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.” We are to enjoy life! Enjoy life that is pleasing to God and to enjoy life in the riches that come with it. If you think enjoying life means you are in the church 24/7 and preaching His word every minute on the clock, you must not truly be happy and satisfied with the life God wants you to explore while still acknowledging Him.

So for all the Saints that said going to the Beyonce’ concert was a sin or going to a bar and getting food, while enjoying a drink or two is a sin, remember this scripture.

By the way the definition of an unbeliever means more than what the church explains.  It is also mentioned in scripture as someone who does not have faith. An unbeliever can be someone who is saved but does not have faith that God is going to bless them with a new home, increase their finances, increase their credit or increase their business. Simply put it faith without works is dead, and that’s biblical.

After I posted a comment saying that I did not see the sin of these young women, a  young lady  told me it was a sin to drink and she brought up the scriptures of  Ephesians 5:6, Galations 5:19-21, and Proverbs 23:31.  While studying these scriptures and diving into other scriptures, it never said that drinking was against God. It states that being drunk off of alcohol is against God.

Ephesians 5:6 says “Do not get DRUNK on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead be filled with the Spirit. The word debauchery means extreme indulgence, excessiveness, dissipation, and corruption . Getting drunk can cloud our judgment and make us do irrational things. This is talked about in the Bible in Proverbs simply saying that if you cannot control how much you drink, it is better to be wise and stay away from drinking so it won’t lead you to making unwise decisions.

You will find that there are many people who take scriptures and run with the wind, putting their own interpretations into scripture where they see fit in order to prove a point. The Bible is a guide to protect us while on this Earth. It’s a guide to strengthen our faith, increase morality, make wise choices with our lives,  and to learn more about God for ourselves while introducing others to His unfailing Love.

The young lady then told me it was no point in her drinking because she wasn’t a sinner anymore since she had  been reborn in Christ and made new. Although this is true this new ‘spiritual’ mentality gets so misconstrued by many new believers.

Just because Jesus died on the cross doesn’t mean you’re not a sinner, it just means that you’re not an unbeliever and every time you sin Jesus is able to make you new again if you believe in Him and confess your sins to the Father, who is God. It means that you trust Jesus to make you whole and new everyday through building a relationship with Him to change all of your fleshly ways and make you more like Him.

When I use the terminology sinner , I’m using it in the context of those who know God but still sin daily and must repent daily. I am not referring to the unbeliever who does not recognize their sin as sin and therefore does not acknowledge their sinful behavior. 1 John 1:8-10 says If we go around bragging “We have no sin”, then we are fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. If we say “We have not sinned”, then we depict God as a liar and show that we have not let His word find its way into our hearts.

(By the way The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are all one. They are not separate. That scripture gets so misconstrued….And  once you have a full understanding and relationship with God , you will understand why!)

Having the mindset that this young lady currently has is why there are so many prideful believers and why many people are unwilling to give God a try. (New believers come down to earth, we aren’t in heaven yet). Instead of casting stones, let’s be transparent.

If you’re already there in your walk every step of the way,  how can God use you to help others? I’m thankful for my walk and will never judge someone where they are.

Humans fall short , humans are fallible! This is why having a relationship with God is thee most important thing.

A few hours went by and I was getting jumped and tagged team online by people who claimed they were in the Spirit of God, saying that they were not passing judgment because people who are saved and live in the Spirit are unable to be judgmental.

They  were referring to 1 Corinthians 2:15 –“He that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man “When your life is blameless, and redeemed by Him, your judgment is true because it’s not from human standard, it’s from the spirit in you , so if that young lady is in Christ (which she is) her judgement is not prideful it’s of the spirit, ” one young man said to me.

As I was writing this blog, I stumbled across a site that broke down the book of Corinthians and explained why Paul was talking to the church in this way. Simply put it the church was disunified.

Now let’s break this scripture down a tons! This scripture gets misinterpreted and thrown all over the place, even by Pastors.

The scripture is  basically saying that a believer has  discernment because of spiritual enlightment and has  assess to spiritual things based on their true nature. It doesn’t mean that the believer can judge a person’s walk and judge scripture based on their own interprations.  Even with this a believer should trail lightly.

A great messenger of the word Dr. A.R. Bernard once preached a message that said”Never put me on a pedestal, because a pedestal is only 3 feet high and I am sure to fall.”

In all things we are to display love , discipline,  faith, forgiveness and self control!

For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. – 1 Corinthians 2:11

If a believer comes at you and starts throwing bible scriptures  at you, mentioning your wrongs, but does not do it in the power of love and understanding, they are not displaying the love of Christ. If they then say well I don’t care how you are living, I’m just trying to enlighten you, which is what many did to me, then that is not the fruit of the spirit and is the fruit of their wickedness.

Do not allow Holier Than Thou Christians  to have an affect on your relationship with Christ. God knows where you are in your walk and in your faith. Hold tight and pray for His guidance, not the guidance and authority of people.
